Year 2006

Designers’ Forum Activities

ECOTA Fair Trade Forum has visited the “Artisan Hut” factory at 1st January in Narayangonj along with Designer’s Forum members and a journalist. 27 February the forum members meet with the chairperson of EFTF Mr. Abdul Awal and Mr. Sukumar Pal, Designer of TARANGO. By this time the forum members also met with Mr. Probir Das, Director of Gram Vati (a NGO working with ethnic people). The weekly meetings of the forum are going as well.

Seminar with EPB

As one of the achievement of EFTF’s advocacy ECOTA arranged a joint seminar “Fair Trade in Bangladesh: development by the people” with Export Promotion Bureau EPB at 23 February In the EPB board room. Mr. Arshad Siddiqui, Director of EFTF presented the key note, Mr. Faridul Hasan, Director of EPB presided in the seminar.

Participation in Jibika Mela

EFTF participated at the Jibika Mela (Char Livelihood Fair) organized by EFTF member “Development Wheel-DEW” from 24-25 February in Char Nolshunda of Jamalpur district. The theme of the fair was the Life and Living of Char Dwellers and that intended to extend an opportunity to link char producers with other chars and mainstream life and living. State Minister of Finance and Planning, Major General (retd.) Mr. Anwarul Kabir Talukder inaugurated the fair. Nick Taylor, First Secretary of the Delegation of the European Commission to Bangladesh, DGM of Pran Group Mr. Tobarak Hossain, Director of Comunicca Mr. Anish Barua, Government officers, Development Partner’s, SMEs and Representatives of Media were also present at the fair. Ms. Nazlee Jamal attended there along with a journalist.

Meeting with Terre des Hommes Italia

A coalition meeting with Mr. Silvio Marconi, Country Representative of Terre des Hommes Italia at took place at 7th March. The meeting focused on to find out the common field of interest for both organizations.  Both the parties agreed to approach collaborative work and to determine the possible issues of work in future road march. Mr. Arshad Siddiqui, Md. Hasan Shahriar and Ms. Nazlee Jamal participated in the meeting.

Meeting with EPB

EFTF attended in the meeting arranged by EPB on “Riyadh Single Country Fair” held at 25-28 May. ECOTA disseminated the information to its member organizations with detail about the fair. Md. Hasan Shahriar was attended in the meeting.

Business Development Service to PUP

16-17 and 25-26 March,EFTF supported to Polle Unnoyon Prokolpo in Bogra for preparing one business proposal, annual report 2005, slide presentation to participate in a fashion show in Brussels and two case study reports

Activities under the EIS Project

EFTF participated in a “Web development and management” training (five days) arranged at 16-21 January by GTZ with ISL. Mr. Arshad Siddiqui,  Md. Hasan Shahriar, and Ms. Nazlee Jamal was participated in the training and completed the course successfully along with the other organization representatives.

Discussion meeting with Oxfam Australia

Ms. Nele Schmidt Teuteberg, Product Development Manager of Oxfam Australia Trading Pvt. Ltd. visited EFTF secretariat and met with the staffs & Designer’s Forum members. She had a special meeting with EFTF member organization and made a presentation on Oxfam trading activities in this region. “We are interested to make a long term relationship with Bangladeshi producers”- she said with hope. She visited 8 EFTF member organizations of ECOTA.

Consultancy Activities

EFTF completed the Study on Fair Trade Producer Groups of Bangladesh as a consultancy work for “People Tree”, Japan.

EFTF Web Site

EFTF has launched its new website on test basis- www.ecotaftf.org/test. Another initiative has taken to develop the website with the financial assistance of GTZ.

5th World Fair Trade Day

EFTF observed the 5th world fair trade day with a Seminar “Fair Trade in Bangladesh: development by the people” with Export Promotion Bureau EPB at 23 February. Mr. Arshad Siddiqui, Director of ECOTA Fair Trade Forum presented the key note paper while Mr. Faridul Hasan, Director of EPB presided over the event in the EPB board room. Participant’s attended from various GO-NGO, SMEs.

Business Development Service to SOVA

EFTF supported to SOVA for preparing organisational Brochure.

Activities under the EIS Project

ECOTA staffs has participated the following Trainings:
Library Management Training from 16th -18th April .
Training on Business Correspondent dated 27th May and 03rd June.

Members’ Profile

Executive Committee Meeting

The EC meeting of EFTF held at 12 March in EFTF meeting room. The committee members were discussed about some present issues and approved the last minutes in the meeting.

Year 2005

  • Study on Craft Sector in Bangladesh : Promises & Challenges

    EFTF conducted a study on “Craft Sector in Bangladesh: Promises & Challenges” with an overview to identify the constraints the craft sector is facing following some strategic recommendations.

    Best Practice Documentation

    EFTF prepared a “Best Practice Document of the year 2004”. Though the best practice document all of the member organization can share their knowledge and experience with each other.

  • Research Presentation Seminar on “Crafts Sector in Bangladesh: Promises and Challenges”.

    Research Presentation Seminar on “Crafts Sector in Bangladesh: Promises and Challenges” at 28th February, Monday, Press Club Conference Lounge. The seminar presided by Dr. Ahmed Kamal and the speakers Mustafa Mohiuddin, Director General EPB; Michel B. Gomes, Chairperson Asia Fair Trade Forum AFTF; Arshad Siddiqui, Director ECOTA Fair Trade Forum. Dr. Syed Tarique-Uz-Zaman presented the keynote paper. Mr. Abdul Awal, Chairperson ECOTA Fair Trade Forum moderated the session. The representatives from GO, NGO and journalist of various news agencies contributed their opinion.

  • Global Week of Action 2005 from 10-16th April

    ECOTA observed this Action Week comprising various events at 12, 13 and 16th April. ECOTA organized a colorful rally, press briefings and candle light procession in Dhaka. Respectively, Rishilpi Development Project at Satkhira district, Thanapara Swallows Development Society at Rajshahi and Young Power Social Action YPSA at Chittagong observed events on the occasion.

  • World Fair Trade Day, 14th May

    EFTF arranged a discussion session at central public library seminar hall. The session chaired by Mrs. Bertha Gity Baroi, EC member of EFTF. Mr. Mostofa Mohiuddin , Director General, EPB was the guest of honor and Mr. Salaimullah Khan was the key Discussant and moderated by Arshad Sidiqui, Director of EFTF.

    AGM of EFTF held at organizations Auditorium at 27th April.

  • Focus Group Discussion
  • ECOTA Fair Trade Forum arranged a FGD on “trade aid Focus Group Discussion on Social Order’ with its four members on June 14 in its Auditorium. The participants were Dhaka Handicraft, YWCA Craft Centre, Corr the Jute Work and MCC.

  • Seminar on Fair Trade in Bangladesh : Challenges and Prospects

    ECOTA Fair Trade Forum organised the seminar on September 17 at IDB Bhaban.  Mr. Mahfuz Ullah, Secretary General of CFSD; Mr. Michel B. Gomes, Chairperson of Asia Fair Trade Forum; Prof. M. M. Akash Economics Department, Dhaka University and Prof. Anu Muhammad , Economics Department, Jahangirnagar University were presented as guest of honor. Chairperson of EFTF Mr. Abdul Awal moderated the seminar and Director Mr. Arshad Siddiqui presented the keynote paper. The open discussion programme was participated by personnel from GO, NGOs, SMEs, Civil society members and media representatives.

  • Designers' Forum of ECOTA

    Aiming to sharing experience and knowledge with the craft producers, ECOTA formed a Designers’ Forum in 2004. The forum members regularly sit together, make discussion and made an exposure visit with producer groups of Dhaka Handicrafts at Savar in the 26th Sep, Monday, 2005 for better understanding the real experience on product designing.

  • Karushilpee, the quarterly Newsletter

    Karushilpee a quarterly newsletter of EFTF published with news on current issues, market information and opportunities, members'-Buyer's-Fair's-Conference’s information, Contemporary articles, declaration and many more.

  • Campaign Materials

    Poster, Sticker, Booklet and leaflets were published in the occasion of Global Week of Action 2005 and World Fair Trade day 2005. These were distributed among the stakeholders. On the occasion of Global Action Week a DABINAMA has also published which include the expectations/recommendations of Bangladeshi artisan and sent it to our Peoples Representatives (MPs) for their action.

  • Launched the Study of “Craft Sector in Bangladesh : Promises & Challenges”

    The Study on “Craft Sector in Bangladesh: Promises & Challenges” has published as a complete book by the EFTF and it has launched on the occasion of World Fair Trade Day 2005 by Mostofa Mohiuddin, Director General of EPB. The book is selling now for all.

  • Annual Report 2004

    EFTF has published the Annual Report of the year 2004 at 15 September 05 that placed in the Special General Meeting SGM and distributed to EFTF stakes.

  • Brochure

    EFTF has published a new Brochure at 14 September 05 to highlight organizational image.

  • Workshop on “Basic Handicraft Design”

    Under the networking project, a weeklong workshop from 19-26 April organized by EFTF in cooperation with DTC on “Basic Handicraft Design”. This time Mr. Chandra Shaker Shah, Mr. Sabih-Ul-Alam, Mr.A.M. Saadullah, Mr.Sohail Askar presented in the weeklong workshop as resource persons.

Launched EIS Project

ECOTA Fair Trade Forum has made a partnership with GTZ to implementing Enterprise Information Services (EIS) project in Bangladesh. The project is initiated that aiming to face the post MFA era in developing countries. Primarily, the project has started from June 2005 and ends at December 2007. Objective of the component is “Increased Use and Improved Supply of Demand-Led Enterprise Information”. Under the project ECOTA representatives are

Attended in GMO workshop

Ms. Nazlee Zamal, Networking and Coordination officer of ECOTA has participated in the GMO workshop at Mymensign from 10 to 11 September which organized by VOICE.

  • IFAT Bi-annual Conference, Quito , Equador

    In the last May 1 to 7, IFAT bi-annual conference held in Quito, Equador where representative of three EFTF member organizations were participated there namely Mr. Abdul Awal, Chief Coordinator of NRDS; Mr.Shah Abdus Salam, Executive Director  of Development Wheel DEW and A. B. M. Ruhul Quddus Shahnewaj, Coordinator of Jahanara Cottage Industries JCI.

  • WSIS round table consultation

    ECOTA has participated in the WSIS round table consultation at 10 September organized by BFES at BRAC Center. Mr. Md. Hasan Shahriar Program Officer of EFTF was attended in the seminar as a representative of EFTF where discussed about upcoming WSIS second phase event which held in Tunis form 16 to 18 November.

  • Visit to Germany

    During 25 August to 11 September, Mr. Arshad Siddiqui, Director of ECOTA visited to Germany aiming to Study of Craft Sector in Germany. This tour was initiated by GTZ PROGRESS-3 for individual training benefits as well as organizations design support.

  • Media Coverage Report

    EFTF has produced a Media Coverage Report during January to December consisted event wise media coverage that focused on EFTF's recent activities, fair trade issues and future plan for the improvement of Handicraft Sector in Bangladesh.

Year 2004

  • Established a Designer Forum with the students of Art Institute of Dhaka University at 29th December, 3.00 p.m.
  • EFTF arranged a media workshop on “influence of mass media to expand of Fair Trade” with the journalists of reputed national dailies at 29th December, 10.00 a.m.
  • Organized a one week long textile workshop on surface design “Working with Hand Print” from 26 to 31 July DTC auditorium and eight organizations were participated in the workshop.
  • EFTF observed World Fair Trade Day on 8 May. “SMALL CHANGE BIG DIFFERENCE” was the main theme of the year. EFTF also arranged a central rally, a press conference, a daylong product display at 7th & 8th May on the occasion.
  • Product development workshop was organised EFTF at 23-24 Oct at WVA Auditorium to focus household textile accessories.
  • EFTF participated & Coordinated of “Global Journey” and EFTF itself arranged a colorful rally with co-operation of member. Under the co-ordination of EFTF, two organizations Rishilpi Development Project, Satkhira and Thanapara Swallows Development Society, Rajshahi were taken some events as press conference, rally etc. to observe the Global Journey locally.

Year 2003

  • EFTF organized workshop on ‘Global E-commerce for Bangladesh ' with PEOPLink where 21 participants from 15 organizations participated.
  • Trained up personnel of EFTF and members' regarding the uses of e-mail and internet. 28 people from different organizations participated in the training.
  • World Fair Trade Day 2003, May 16 & 17 observed to highlight the activities regarding Fair Trade.
  • EFTF Visited the members' working areas, Developed Product Gallery for EFTF website, Frequent Buyer and donor contacted, Prepared catalogue in the form of CD and disseminated Market information such European Fair Trade Market Overview 2003, Market Profile: UK Home Accessories 2003/2004 were distributed among buyers and Fair Traders.
  • Karushilpee published and distributed among stakeholders.
  • EFTF extended its services to Local and International organisations working towards establishment of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). This activity could earn revenue for EFTF core fund.
  • Workshop on Board Building was organized with the member organizations.
  • EFTF developed and upgraded its website www.ecotaftf.org.
  • EFTF supported to develope the HEED Handicrafts website www.heedhandicrafts.com
  • Provided hardware and trouble shooting support to EFTF members through out the “Network” project.
  • To strengthening the Fair and Ethical Trade Issues & Self-Monitoring among the Practitioners a workshop on Campaigning for Corporate Social Responsibility organized jointly with Traidcraft. Participants from EFTF members, GO, NGOs, Garments and International Development Agencies were attended there.
  • Aiming to Campaign for the significance & benefits of fair & ethical trade practices, a Seminar arranged.
  • Assisted to the IFAT members (also member of ECOTA) in doing Self Assessment and development of a format by they got the accreditation from IFAT.
  • Material developed for campaigning of Fair & ethical trade: Posters – 2, Sticker – 1, Leaflets, Documentary – 1 prepared.

Year 2002

  • Workshop on “Financing Fair Trade in Bangladesh” was organized jointly by EFTF and SISL which is a co-operative lending society, based in Newcastle, UK held on April 23.
  • Workshop on “Fair Trade & Gender Issues” was organized to promote fair trade and create consciousness regarding gender issue on August 11 at the WVA auditorium.
  • EFTF was organised a one-day workshop on “How to Succeed in International Trade Fair Participation” was held at IDB Bhaban on 30 January.
  • EFTF organized a workshop on sharing of “knowledge gained during the visit to Manila” for all the members.
  • EFTF participated in the IFAT Regional Conference at Jakarta in Indonesia.
  • EFTF organised a buyer-seller meeting with Mr. David Cambioli from Italy. At different times, EFTF received a number of visitors from abroad who are active in promoting Fair Trade. The organisations are : Fair Trade Group, Nepal; Paul Mayer, Ten Thousannd Village, USA; Ockenden International, Pakistan; Helen McCree Traidcraft, UK; Nick Nighty, Traidcraft, UK; John Hinton, Traidcraft UK; Mr Martin, UK; Ms Christine Gent, Traidcraft, UK; Mr Colin Crawford, SISL.
  • EFTF organised a national press conference on the occasion of World Fair Trade Day 4 May at the Dhaka Reporter's Unity auditorium. A discussion meeting was also organised to share the experiences of the producers of fair traders to know about the producers' life and their perception of Fair Trade.
  • ECOTA developed its own Website www.ecota.net.
  • EFTF organised a local trade fair “ECOTA Trade Fair 2002” at Shishu Academy Ground from 9-15 April as part of the local trade promotional activities.

Year 2001

  • ECOTA hired Victoria zeffert an European Design Consultant to work with its members/partners to develop new product for European Market.
  • Under the facilitation of the designers BIFT and Jackie Corrlett, a technical design input training was organized by EFTF.
  • ECOTA arranged a Market Awareness Tour in England as a part of trade facilitation program. Mr. Bimal Banik, Director of Swajan Bangladesh- a partner organization of ECOTA Fair Trade Forum was sent to England from April 25 to May 5, 2001.
  • ECOTA won the DTI Worldwide Business award '2001 for Capacity Building.
  • ECOTA participated Ambient International fair held in Germany at 14-23 February.
  • ECOTA participated in “Into the Market” seminar at 16th to 22nd Sep 2001 held in Netherlands to better understanding of the participants about the mainstream market issues and networking with the other organisations involved in seminar works.
  • ECOTA organized a workshop on CatGen (Catalogue Generator) as part of its ongoing LAGMI project activity that funded by PEOPLink-USA to make web catalogue easily.
  • ECOTA organized a weeklong “Creativity and Design” Training held on 09-13 September.
  • In 2001, ECOTA was able to catch the attention of the media people throughout the year. There was information about ECOTA's activities on almost all the most popular dailies, both Bengali & English. ECOTA also hold press conference to share the various issues related to fair trade, the growth of export, its own strategies and actions for the development of the craft industry of the country and the role of govt. to facilitate the SMEs involved in this sector.

Year 2000

  • ECOTA organized the Asia Regional Fair Trade Exhibition that was the first of its kind, was held in Dhaka in 18-22 January.
  • ECOTA took part in the Spring Fair, Birmingham from 6-10 February.
  • A follow up Quality Assurance Workshop was held from 29-30 March.
  • Design Input for X-Mas product has been organized by ECOTA from 10-18 May.
  • ECOTA Fair Trade Forum organised two product development workshops in 8-9 May, focused on Christmas products and textile household accessories. The other important aspect of the workshop was development of a excel software based costing worksheet which enabled the participants to calculate proper costing more easily.
  • ECOTA established the MIS library, the MIS material categorized and shelved. Some design books are bought for MIS library.
  • ECOTA organized Quality Assurance Workshop at March.
  • Workshop on Costing & Pricing has arranged by ECOTA at 12-13 July.
  • ECOTA took part in the Tendence fair at Frankfurt , Germany in august.
  • This year ECOTA organised a two-day follow up workshop on Quality Management Support.
  • EFTF has organised a national seminar on Fair Trade in Bangladesh on Nov at CIRDAP auditorium.
  • ECOTA Fair Trade Fair was organised from Nov 21-25 at Shishu Academy Ground. 25 member-partner organisation of EFTF took part in the fair and total sale was Tk. 843,388.00 and 10,876.00 people visited the fair.
  • Two-days Workshop on Product Costing & Pricing was organised to give a clearer idea about the cost incurred in production know the importance of conducting proper costing analysis and based on these analyses, set proper pricing of product.
  • This year ECOTA Fair Trade Forum organised 4 export market awareness training programme for the staffs of its 4 member/partner organisations in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. At same time as the Christmas product development another Product Design input was given to members and partners organizations by a local consultant.
  • ECOTA organized “International design Input” held on Oct 21-Nov 7. Member-partner organizations were got new product development support through Design Input workshop. The major focus of the input was on household textile and fashion accessories.
  • To Exposure for the Craft-persons at National & Regional Level ECOTA Fair Trade Forum initiated a programme called Producer Exchange Visit in which producers of different member-partner organizations get the opportunity to visit one another's project and exchange ideas and experience with each other.
  • ECOTA Fair Trade Forum implemented a series of activities under the Linking Artisans to Global Markets via Internet (LAGMI) Project in the respective project area.
  • Producer Workshop on Terracotta & Jute products was held at WVA Auditorium on Oct 30.
  • A two-year project titled Craft and Producer Improvement Project (CAPI) is launched aiming to improve the condition of the grass-root level producers through lobbying and advocacy with various GOs, NGOs, and other organizations, and to carry out research/study on a number of craft and producer related issues.
  • Under capacity building program of Program Manager and Marketing Manager have been visited various organizations for business counseling and need analysis and collected firsthand information regarding strength and weakness of members.
  • ECOTA Forum's marketing activities are being started in full swing from January.
  • The quarterly newsletter ECOTA Forum news has been published regularly.
  • New Product Development Consultancy provided by EFTF.
  • ECOTA Forum published a booklet on `Fair Trade: Definition and perspective' in both language. This booklet was distributed in national seminar and Fair Trade Fair inauguration program.

Year 1999

  • ECOTA's established a MIS library provides pictorial reference materials that will give visual information about current trend in relevant product areas of the global markets and also other related information for international marketing of Bangladeshi handicrafts.
  • MIS Workshop was organized By EFTF at the beginning of 1999 with aim to help participants understand the role market information plays in successful product development and other elements of export market and to introduce ECOTA MIS Library that will collect & disseminate current market information for its members/partners.
  • Three Product Development Workshops organized by EFTF which were a practical approach to providing both training and design input.
  • The two designers provided Design Input to a target group of members/partners. The focus of one was on general handicrafts and the other targeting the International trade Fair" Tendence 99".
  • ECOTA organized 3rd design input service workshop from Oct 27- Nov 06.
  • A national conference and workshop on handicraft and textile export opportunities was organized by ECOTA Fair Trade Forum at 24th June.
  • ECOTA Fair Trade Forum organized a 2 day quality assurance workshop from Dec 07-08.
  • A follow up workshop of "Packing for Export" organized at May 30-Jun 02 & Jun 07.
  • Producer's Workshop and Meeting was held at Nov27.
  • Product Development Consultancy for members/nonmembers NGOs and SME's, Aug 26- Sep 21.
  • ECOTA took initiatives and send 3 members and 1 partner to attended Int'l Trade Fair, Tendence'99 in Germany and Market Awareness Tour in the UK , the Germany and the Netherlands .
  • Product Development Consultancy was provided by EFTF at 1999.

Year 1998

  • Packing for Export Workshop has been organized by EFTF in Nov 28-29.
  • Workshop of Photography organized by EFTF on May 23 at BRAC-CDM, Rajendrapur.

Year 1997

  • ECOTA organized a two months long training program exclusively on design education.
  • ECOTA took part in Ambiente Fair'97 that held at Frankfurt from February 14-18 which was ECOTA's first appearance in Ambiente Fair.
  • ECOTA Fair Trade Forum also took part in a local craft fair from April 22-25.
  • In April 1997, ECOTA facilitated and encouraged its members to attend the 4th biennial IFAT Conference held at Ooty, India.
  • Workshop on "Dye Stuff and Paint" organized by ECOTA Fair Trade Forum in Jan 13-15.
  • Workshop on Packing for Export has been developed in 1997 developed by Fair Trade Assistance.
  • Training Workshop on Domestic & Global Marketing management of Handicrafts organized from 20-22 December.
  • ECOTA launched another project called "Linking Artisan to Global Market via Internet" which was basically promotion of indigenous craft and artisan via Internet. Under this project, video images of the products, producers, production process, information on raw materials etc are taken and then these images are converted into digital form, so that they can be put as graphic image in ECOTA's web page.

Year 1995-96

  • Arranged IFAT South and Southeast Asian Regional Conference '1996 :
  • Need Assessment Workshop on Health and Safety measure organized at 23-24 May.
  • Product Packaging and Presentation programme was organized mainly with a view to motive and makes aware the producer about the present status of the craft world and its demand and possibilities.

  • ECOTA organized the Needle Work Workshop that held at May 26-30 to serve as a pilot programme for similar future programmes which may be launched on a more ambitious scale and also to increase awareness of Nalshi Kantha traditions and skills, celebrate indigenous Bangladeshi craftsmanship.
